Keynote: Roohi Moolla

Born in Burma, growing up in England, Scotland and Wales, moving to Canada with my family as a teenager and then to the US as an adult, Roohi Moolla has had the privilege and pleasure of having lived and traveled all over the world. With more than 28 years of experience spanning careers in Architecture and Information Technology, Roohi’s unique background in the creative and technology fields has given her a passion for solving business problems with out-of-the-box thinking.

In her early career, Roohi was involved in a number of large-scale residential and commercial ventures in Toronto, Canada. For the past 16 years, her career in website technology has included a number of software startups, including the dating site that became Match.com, a proprietary Bid/RFP procurement and subscription system (now publicly traded as Onvia) and a Syndicate Municipal Bond Trading platform, BondDeskSyndicate – which gave me the opportunity to travel all over the US to train corporate executives including underwriters, bankers, and investors.

These days, Roohi writes, speaks, blogs and acts as a resource for all things Social and Digital Media, including SocialBizNow,  a news and information website on social media, technology and the digital web. She is also the founder of Neighborhoodnow, an online community portal, and the Producer of SocialBizWorld.

Roohi holds a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arizona, and is a Microsoft Certified Professional.

Special Guest: The TwitchHiker aka Paul Smith

Paul Smith - The TwitchHikerBefore he was a writer, blogger and author, Paul Smith was an award-winning radio producer, trainee rocket scientist and almost, but not quite, inventor of the portable toaster.

In March 2009, he had an idea to test whether relationships formed through social media networks had value in the real world, and embarked upon the Twitchhiker project – an attempt to travel to the opposite side of the planet within 30 days, relying entirely on the goodwill and generosity of people using Twitter.

Unable to ask for help, pay for transport or accommodation or plan more than three days’ ahead, Paul depended on offers made by individuals and businesses on Twitter to travel from Europe, across the US and into the Southern hemisphere. Along the way, his journey saw him spend time in the company of numerous Twitter users in Petaluma, Sonoma and San Francisco.

In March this year, Paul received the Shorty Award for best use of real-time content, and in August his book - Twitchhiker: How One Man Travelled the World by Twitter - was published by Summersdale. As well as continuing to blog about travel at Twitchhiker.com, Paul operates a successful digital agency developing mobile applications.
